Virtual Prototype, more agile product development

The use of virtual prototypes in the product development process allows a more flexible analysis of its design possibilities and problems.

Prototyping and production processes have experienced great advances driven by digital transformation. In a certain way, the use of digital models has reduced the need for physical resources when we talk about developing and analyzing a product. The virtual prototype has become an indispensable element for many designers.

One of the great advantages of this technique is the cost derived from the production of physical prototypes, which is reduced. In addition, it offers more agility when making modifications or exposing the prototype to different simulations.

In a short time, we can generate and simulate a virtual prototype, as well as make modifications in comparison with the limitations of the physical model

Virtual Prototype

Virtual prototyping is applied in product development and requires the use of computer-aided design (CAD), computer-automated design (CAutoD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) software.

Its main objective is to facilitate the validation stage of a certain design before applying efforts in the creation of a physical prototype. In this sense, virtual prototypes and physical prototypes are compatible. However, pre-design imperfections can be anticipated prior to production of the physical model.

The group or the individual parts that make up the prototype can be opened in a CAE program to generate simulated situations of the product.

Before and now

In the past, the product design process was based on the intuition of developers and engineers. The goal was to give birth to a physical prototype that was later subjected to different tests to analyze how it works. Of course, there was no way to assess product performance, weaknesses, or aesthetics, prior to this prototype production process.

Now, if we consider the great precision that manufacturers are subjected to re-evaluate their products and remain competitive, a more agile way of developing a product is needed. Thus, virtual prototypes allow engineers to explore numerous design options without making a large investment. This flexibility is translated into a reduction in the launch time in relation to the use of physical prototypes.

On the other hand, end-to-end prototyping is focused on analyzing the different phases of production and assembly of a product to connect them with the performance of the design itself.

The main benefit is that testing required is reduced. And robust and effective manufacturing is promoted.

Working with virtual prototypes offers more agility when making modifications.

Advantages of working
with virtual prototypes

Organizations can optimize the planning phase and avoid complications during the manufacturing of their products. On the other hand, in terms of project management, they can have a closer and decentralized collaboration between team members in relation to the use of physical resources.

In addition, they offer the following advantages:

More flexible design framework

It provides a more flexible framework for all collaborators, especially for industrial designers. This increases productivity and communication in the design phase.

Smart components

It facilitates the creation of intelligent components. Thanks to this possibility, engineers can focus their efforts on functionality, instead of geometry. This reduces the time required.

Reusable data

It favors the use of the data collected in previous projects to increase the productive level and the link between different areas of responsibility and with external suppliers.

Optimization of manufacturing processes

It contributes to improving the manufacturing processes of injection molds and other plastic elements.

More agile testing

It offers the option of subjecting the prototypes to motion tests and other simulations.
