Vertical Farming, Barkitecture, Book-wrap? At the same time that our spaces change, so does the language we use to describe them. In the next sections, we take a look at the trends in Interior Design for 2022 and the approaches that currently dominate the creative field.

Trends in Interior Design for 2022

Trends come and go; however, some concepts are built to remain.

Vertical Farming

Some agricultural techniques have not changed in hundreds of years. However, global warming has increased the risk of floods and droughts, which is putting to the test the existing methods.

In this sense, indoor vertical farming (Vertical Farming) combines the latest technology and a highly aesthetic approach to create an artificial growing environment. Suitable for many different plant species.

If all households had their own farming space, they would be taking a step towards food self-sufficiency. In the future, this aspect will be a must for many owners. In this way, interior designers have already set to work to integrate vertical farming into their compositions.

Barkitecture

With the outbreak of the pandemic, the demand for pets increased. The American TV star Taniya Nayak coined the term “Barkitecture”. Considered one of the main interior trends for 2022 by Pinterest, Barkitecture proposes to keep our pets in mind when redecorating.

Pinterest notes that searches for ways to adapt homes to accommodate cats and dogs are on the rise. For example, searches like “luxury dog room” have increased by 115%. Searches like “dog beds made from furniture” have also doubled since 2021.

Many dog spaces today are integrated with other rooms in the house (such as the kitchen or boot room) to keep dirty paws at bay, but this concept involves designing only areas for dogs.

The era of the home gym or game room is over, it seems that our pets will be the first to occupy the free room.

Book-wrapt

At the end of last year, Julie Lasky, in an article for The New York Times, popularized the term to define a home dominated by books. The concept, on the other hand, was coined by Reid Byers, a computer systems architect who set out to build a private library in his home in Princeton, New Jersey. His efforts are synthesized in the book The Private Library: The History of the Architecture and Furnishing of the Domestic Bookroom, published by Oak Knoll Press.

The library house is a project in constant evolution that reflects the personality of the residents, both in the choice of books and in the way the volumes are organized: by colors or by genres? Is it presented with the spines open to create a dynamic and colorful space, or are they placed upside down?

Circularity

We want to reduce, reuse and recycle. For example, if we have a chair that has gone out of style, we don’t buy a new chair, we wonder how we can change the chair to fit our new style again. Or how we can change its materials to reuse them.

There are many alternatives, and the interior designers most focused on offering Eco-Friendly proposals use their ingenuity to reuse as many objects as possible and integrate them into the new composition.
